Shane Raincrow is a U.S. Marshall. He's also tall, dark, and Cherokee.

Kaitlin Corbin is a bride who doesn't really want to get married to a man she suspects is dealing drugs and double crossing a cartel.

When gunfire interrupts her wedding, Shane takes her into custody as a material witness. Instead of delivering her to a safe house, they hit the road but trouble follows so they head for the only place Shane thinks is safe—the Cherokee Nation where he was born.

By the time they get hitched in a one-hour wedding chapel and reach his grandfather's home deep in the Oklahoma hills, they're falling in love—for real. The survival stakes are high, especially when the drug cartel comes after them and they make a stand, backed by Shane's family. If they can survive, maybe the marriage will too.

Excerpt:

“Did the shoot-out make the paper this far away?” she asked, as she slid into the seat.

He folded the paper back and shook his head. “No, but your death did.”

Her lungs ceased working and she had no air to breathe. Kaitlin’s chest tightened and she stared at him. Maybe her ears had quit too because she couldn’t believe what he had said.

“What?”

“According to that, you died after the shooting,” he told her. “The story, with no byline except From Staff Reports, says that ‘the bride, 29-year-old Kaitlin Joy Corbin, was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital after a random shooting at her wedding. Corbin’s fiancé, Dr. Chad Cox, was not injured in the attack. Three guests were treated and released for minor injuries’.”

“That’s not true!” If she could talk, she must be breathing but it didn’t feel that way.

“Of course it’s not,” Shane said. “But it means you’re in even more danger than I thought. Somebody knows you’re alive or they wouldn’t have tried to kill you night before last at the motel.”

“Chad thinks I’m dead?”

Shane shrugged. “That remains to be seen. I’m glad I saw this before I called the marshal’s office, though.”

“You have to tell them I’m alive,” she said. Her heart had climbed into her throat where it froze into a hunk of ice.

“Let’s see what they say first.”

He had to be joking and she didn’t find it funny, not at all, and told him so.

“I’m not amused either. If they also think you’re dead, then this thing just got more complicated and confusing.”

Shane drove to a larger parking lot where multiple stores ringed the concrete. Most had not opened yet or were just unlocking the doors. Kaitlin watched as he took out his work cell and turned it on. Immediately it beeped to indicate messages, which he ignored.

“It’s Raincrow,” he barked into the receiver when someone answered. “Let me talk to Mickelberg. Yeah, it’s urgent.”

“Put it on speaker,” Kaitlin whispered. She needed to hear this as much as he did.

“Mickelberg,” a gruff voice said. “This had better be good, Raincrow. You’ve been AWOL since the wedding shooting. I had begun to think you were as dead as the material witness.”

“I’m alive and kicking but I wasn’t aware Ms. Corbin was deceased.”

“She died that night and our case with her. Where in the name of the Devil have you been?”

“I was attempting to locate her, as ordered.”

“You wasted your time, then. There’s no need to protect a dead witness.”

“Will there be a service? I’d like to pay my respects.”

Kaitlin listened, desperate for answers.

“None. She had no family, no last wishes, no funeral plans in place. Her fiancé donated her body to science so she was shipped to the UMKC Medical School. Her cadaver will help students learn anatomy.”

“I see,” Shane said. If he did, Kaitlin didn’t and she parted her lips to speak. Shane clapped his large hand over his lips and shook his head. “Did she have a will?”

“No, but Dr. Cox said he’d let it go through probate. I have a new assignment for you—a money laundering case down in Forsythe. Word is that the perps are using—get this—a laundromat as their base. Get your ass in and I’ll get the file for you.”

“I’ll be there later today, maybe tomorrow.”

“Don’t try me, Raincrow, and don’t go rogue. I need you in my office by noon.”

The call ended. Shane swore as he popped the battery out of the phone, then drove to the nearest trash receptable. He tossed the battery into it, then crossed the lot to another and threw the phone inside.

Suspense and Intrigue
Written by Bookishllly on 16th Apr 2023

Very few books will spike your interest from the first page. This did. It was interesting and engaging from start to finish. There was no dull moment. The suspense was created early in the book and lasted till the climax of the book. I enjoyed reading about Shane’s family and the love and familial connection amongst them. I particularly like this book for its diversity- the MMC is Cherokee. I love how the author was able to create a realistic setting for the story and the plight faced by the Cherokee Nation. I enjoyed the love story between Shane and Kaitlin and reading the story of Ned Christie (who was real BTW). If you love diversity, romance with suspense and intrigue then I recommend this book.

Great read
Written by Pauli on 16th Apr 2023

In some ways, it's a typical "on the run from the bad guys" story but it is told in such a way that it's completely new. The sprinkling of Cherokee traditions, beliefs and folklore gives it a depth that makes you want more stories. The characters are described in a way that makes you think you would recognise them if you met. Complete and utterly enjoyable read!

Contemporary Historical Romance...naaahhhh
Written by Beast's Beauty on 16th Apr 2023

First let me say, rarely do I give 5 stars however the depictions in this book of Native Americans is fiya!! This author (my first time reading) created characters with flaws, and depth that is rarely depicted and with clear and concise references to culture and history that not many know how to weave the information within the story to give it depth, structure and very solid foundation. Out the gate you learn that Kaitlin is unhappy and not quite sure that her fiancé is what she want or if the life she so desperately is clinging to is worth the effort. On her walk down the aisle she glances and locks her eyes on Shane..quick but profound moment. Shane was not an invited guest, but whose to know who was and wasn't. Anyway, Shane locks eye on Kaitlin and something shatters and mends together at the same time gunfire rings out and he is in action. From that moment on The Spirits have guided Kaitlin and Shane to go "home"...cause that is where the fight ends...and the new life begins. Throughout the book, which is very fast paced by the way, you learn about Kaitlins life (not so good), her childhood and her struggle to be loved. In the same breath, you learn that Shane is there to protect her and that they are both being hunted by who..they have no idea...why? Still no clue. What they do discover is that home is not a place but a community that accepts you for you and love comes not from knowing someone totally but choosing to see them and still remain. Shane and Kaitlin exhibit all the feels - fright, love, anxiousness, confusion, anger, lust, and sheer terror but they do it in a way that makes you, the reader, become part of the story from the first word to the last. Excellent read and Ms. Murphy has herself a new reader.

Not expected
Written by xo2read on 16th Apr 2023

Wow, a new author for me. I usually go completely by the cover and I seldom read the blurb/ I want to be surprised and I was. This book was not as expected. It was very good, lots of action, suspense and twists as well, we got some insight into the Cherokee capture. This story revolves around Kaitlin who is about to walk down the aisle when shots are fired. She is immediately taken into custody, protective, by US Marshall, Shane Raincrow. She had no idea that her fiancé had double crossed the cartel and she was going to be made an example of her. The action is not over though, it’s only just started. A really terrific book - I’ll definitely check out this author’s library.

This is the second book I've read written by Lee Ann Sotheimer; I can’t wait to read more of her books. The story is about Kaitlin & Shane; when a shootout happens at her wedding he takes her into custody but instead of taking her to safehouse they go on the run hiding from the cartel. I received a free copy of this book via booksprout and I’m voluntarily leaving a review.

Loved it
Written by Missy P on 5th Mar 2023

I’m of the Nation, so I absolutely loved seeing our language and the Cherokee heritage throughout the story. The minute that Shane saw Caitlin in her wedding dress, he wanted her. Thankfully the sniper missed and they got away; except they were followed. Through Shane’s family, and some special help; these two were able to see if they had a future. But they did have to take care of the danger coming their way, will they be ready and live through it? Loved it

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and author for allowing me to read this book for free in exchange for an honest review! I loved this book. The quick love was a little unrealistic, but if you believe in love at first sight, then it’s right up your alley! I enjoyed how the author included Indian heritage into the story and how the ending played out perfectly! This is a great read!

This is one book you don't want to miss!
Written by Odette S on 5th Mar 2023

I received an ARC for an honest review and the opinions expressed in this review are mine alone. I will admit this book took me by surprise. It starts off with a bang and doesn't want to let you go until the very end. I will admit the lead female Kaitlyn got a little bit on my nerves at the beginning, but she slowly grew on me. Now, the male lead Shane Raincrow captured my heart from the beginning. This book was so full of love at first sight, twist and turns that I finished it in one day because I didn't want to put it down. This book will leave you speechless and will stay with you after you finish it. This is one book you don't want to miss!

Shane and Kaitlin.
Written by Maleficent on 5th Mar 2023

Kaitlin is about to walking down the isle on her wedding day, when shots are fired. US Marshall, Shane Raincrow gets her out of the church and takes her into protective custody. Her fiancé had double crossed the cartel and was going to make an example of her. On the way to the safehouse there is trouble at every turn, he decides to take her to the reservation to his grandfather's house. By the time they get there, they have married in small ceremony in Oklahoma. The threat is real, they are coming for both of them. This was a good story, it was more about the danger that was coming that than the chemistry between the two.

This is a very intriguing story that starts off with a reluctant bride and a bang. The story is about Shane Raincrow, US Marshall, and Kaitlin Corbin, a reluctant bride. These two lock eyes and everything is about to change. Shane has been sent to extract Kaitlin and get her to a safe house. Kaitlin is a bride with some knowledge that could get her killed and a drug cartel sending a message. This is such a great story! I could not put it down once I picked it up. The story is action, suspense, mystery, passion, drama, angst and great twists and turns. I loved every bit of it and even the wonderful and touching ending.

Shane and Kaitlin
Written by weaveswife on 5th Mar 2023

This was so amazing! This is the first book I've read by Lee Ann and I am adding her to my list of must read authors. This was such a good story and it was very well balanced. We had their relationship and the steamy times between them, family, danger, etc. It was perfect. The Cherokee of the story was well written too. You can tell Lee Ann took great care to make it authentic and with respect. I adored Coleman and his knowledge and spiritual guidance for this amazing couple. The ending was perfect. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author. ❤️❤️

A gripping read
Written by Izzy N on 5th Mar 2023

The storyline is both engaging and gripping. There is action from the start and it draws the reader further into the book. There are some wonderful characters throughout the stories. I really like Shane and his family. There are some fantastic scenes between them that add richness to the book. There are also some lovely settings that add to the book and build tension in some scenes. I’m not a big fan of insta-love and this is the only part of the book that isn’t really believable to me. Having said that it doesn’t spoil the storyline/book it just stops me giving it 5 stars. I still think people should give it a read and for fans of insta-love that element makes it a must read.
