The TBR Pile Reviews
This is the story about Sam and Gabriel, who met in college and became best friends and lovers. Sam is the son of an ultra-religious minister in a small town. Gabriel understands Sam´s fears of coming out and when he asks him to move with him somewhere else, Sam instead announces that he is going to marry his pregnant friend, whose no-good boyfriend left her. Sam knows he has broken Gabriel´s heart, as well as his own, but he can´t tell even his best friend the secrets that led to his choices. Five years later, when a tragedy frees Sam from the need for secrecy, Gabriel returns. Does Gabriel still love Sam, and will he believe in the story Sam has to tell? This is a relatively short story and I wished that it was longer. This story is partly about Sam´s decision to leave Gabriel and the reasons he had to make the choices he made. It is a big part of the backstory and in part formed Sam as a person; however, this story is mostly about Sam´s coming out. Gabriel is out and proud, and will not live a life in secret, so if Sam wants a second chance with the love of his life, he has to overcome his fears. It is a very well written story, and it feels like that author has a clear sense of who the characters were before writing their story. There is a lot of emotional build-up, that I feel is resolved a little to quickly. Somewhere Only We Know is an engaging read.
