Coffee Time Romance
Max Berisford, Earl of Eydris, is a spy for England. The lifestyle of a spy suits him for now. Travel, having to use your brain to find clues, and hidden information. His biggest regret is not being home much to spend time with his little sister, Camille and his mother. Over the last few years he had run into his French counterpart, Elorie Lavoie, a number of times and he found her a worthy adversary. She was also beautiful and mysterious, as well as deadly, hence her nickname “the Viper”. Deirdre Elorie Lavoie Crescenfort, or “the Viper”, is a spy for France and often finds herself following behind Max in the finding of clues. She worked hard to build her reputation but knows her time is running out, as well as her freedom. Four years ago, she made a deal with her mother and the man who wanted to marry her, the Duke of Morley. She promised to marry the Duke when she turned nineteen, giving her four years of freedom, in exchange for him supporting her mother’s extravagant spending habits. She was afraid of what would happen to her younger sister, Celise, if she did not agree. After Max beats her in obtaining clues to the Damarek, or the Lance of Longinus, which was reportedly the spearhead that had pierced the side of Jesus Christ during the Crucifixion, she fakes her death so France will not come looking for her and returns to her family home to resume her old life and prepare for her wedding. Max and Ellie run into each other at a ball and begin a flirtation. She knows she can not have him, but he is determined to change her mind. Her former partner tracks her down and tries to kill her. Max takes her to his county home to recover from her injuries and continues falling for her. He thinks her real name is another disguise. He decides the best way to win her is to take her with him while he follows the last of the clues to recover the Damarek. I really enjoyed this book. It perfectly fits into the Historical Romance category. Max is the handsome rich bachelor rogue with a heart of gold. Ellie easily portrays a young beautiful rebellious lady of the time. The chemistry between them is easy to feel and believe. There are excellent bad guys in the Duke of Morley and Ellie’s former partner, Rueben. Throw in a pygmy marmoset named Porthos and a Russian monk named Losif, whose main goal is to find some tasty treats to eat, and you have a story you will not want to put down.
