All I wanted was to be free, to not be scared anymore. Was that too much to ask?
I was the unwanted bastard daughter of Finn Byrne. Many feared him and women loved him. My mother didn’t want me, but my birth kept Finn coming around.
After being used as a punching bag for most of my life, I decided to run. The first mistake I made was staying in a small town. The second mistake was falling in love with a guy I barely knew.
Peter lied to me. He manipulated me. Ivan Volkov gave him a job to do, and that was to make me fall in love with him, and get me pregnant. Well, he did all of those things, and I hate him for it, and I love him for it.
I also discovered I’m a wealthy woman. It would seem my grandmother didn’t like her son, nor any of his offspring, but she did like me. I’m the one who has control over the Byrne empire.
And I have a choice to make.
When the time comes, I can choose to leave the Volkov Bratva forever and have my freedom, or I can remain Peter’s wife. I love him, but he doesn’t know how to love me. What choice do I have?

“You know, a lot of people are going to hate you,” she said, smiling. “So, if you don’t get hungover, do you forget things?”
“I remember I kissed you last night.”
She stopped pouring cereal out and glanced over at me. I stared right at her, and I watched her cheeks go flush.
“Oh,” she said.
“Do you want to talk to me about that?”
“It’s fine. It was a mistake and you were drunk and it is never going to happen again. We don’t have to talk about it.”
She was cute when she rambled.
“It wasn’t a mistake.”
She jerked the cereal up, and several pieces spilled out of the top, landing on the table, and a few ended up on the floor. I made her nervous.
“I, uh, I don’t think we should talk about this.”
“Talk about what? The fact that since I first saw you at the diner, I’ve been thinking about kissing you?” I asked.
“You shouldn’t say those things.”
“Don’t you like the truth?”
She pushed her chair back and took a step away. I got to my feet, and it didn’t take me long to close the distance she was trying to create. Nor was it hard to manipulate her movements and have her pressed up against the door of the fridge, with no way to escape.
If, for even a second, I thought she was afraid, I’d back away. I’m not here to scare her. I’m here to … well, arouse her. To get this party started.
I couldn’t waste more time with bounty hunters on the loose, potentially tracking her down. Putting both of my hands on either side of her head, I stared into her eyes.
“Peter?”
“What’s the matter? Are you afraid of me?”
“I … no, I’ m not afraid of you.”
“Then what is wrong?”
“There are other women who want you, and they will do anything you want.”
I close the distance between us, so that she could feel the hard ridge of my cock pressing against her stomach. “No other woman makes me feel like that.” I had to stop playing the long game, and instead play the short game.
Ivan, for whatever reason, needed this woman pregnant. It was my job to get her pregnant, and training her, touching her, wasn’t doing the trick. I could no longer attempt to flirt or take my time. I needed to get into her pants, fast.
“Peter?” she asked.
“Is there another guy?” I asked. “Is that why you don’t want me? There is someone else you want.”
“I don’t know what to do with this. I’ve never been put in this position. I … I…”
She was struggling and that was when I realized something. Niamh didn’t have a clue what was happening right now. Even though her father was Finn Byrne, and I had been under the assumption she knew exactly what was going on—sex, fucking, making love, whatever word people wanted to call it—Niamh didn’t have a clue. I was attempting to seduce a woman who’d never experienced it. Did Ivan even know this?
I didn’t know the extent of the abuse she’d suffered at the hands of her father. All I could do was make assumptions.
Sinking my fingers into her hair, I decided to just go for it, and I took possession of her lips, kissing her hard. She gasped, and I used that to my advantage, plunging my tongue into her mouth, and hearing her moan. She tasted like mint toothpaste. She’d not even gotten to sip her coffee, and her cereal wasn’t eaten.
Niamh smelled good, and she tasted good. I ran my other hand down her body, and knew she felt good as well.
My arousal wasn’t forced. I wanted to be inside her. This was not going to be a hard task.
All too soon, Niamh pulled away and nibbled the corner of her lip. “I don’t know what to do,” she said.
I think it could be the most honest she had ever been with me.
“Normally, you kiss me back.”
“I, uh, Peter, I … Pickle Quest is not my home. I don’t intend to stay here too long.”
“You’re moving on?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“I don’t know.” She frowned. “I don’t know, when it’s the right time. I’m traveling, you know. Making enough to be able to move on.”
Now that was a lie, but I wasn’t going to call her out on it. Niamh wasn’t leaving Pickle Quest alone.
“Then how about you and I have some fun while we’re at it?” I asked.
She shook her head. “I can’t have fun.”
I wasn’t going to be swayed. Winking at her, I pulled her in and kissed her again.
For some reason I had put off reading this book, no clue why. I love Sam's books. She's one of my top favorites. But I did decide to read it and as it turns out , , I think it is my favorite of all her books. From the intense start in the prolog, to the final words at the end, I was hooked. So many twists and turns. I just couldn't put it down! This book definitely is 5 stars! ? If you only ever read just one of her books make it, A Monster is coming!
A Monster Is Coming - The Volkov Bratva - Book 4 - By Sam Crescent This is the fourth book in the Volkov Bratva series and it was absolutely outstanding. It features this time around the brigadier Peter Orlov who has been tasked to go undercover as Peter Shadows and get Niamh Long, who is actually Niamh Byrne to fall in love with him and get her pregnant. Niamh is hiding and on the run trying to escape the vicious clutches of her father Finn Byrne, the head of the Irish Mafia. She had made it to the perfectly named town of Pickle Quest safely and in her own. She has no plans to stay long as she knows she needs to keep moving before her father gets his hands on her again but she never anticipated Peter or the affect he would have on her and her heart. This is a beautifully written story although it has fear, hurt, pain and violence, it also gives us love, heat, humour, happiness and family. Such an enjoyable read with characters who had been through so much yet still fought to stay together. I loved it. Ivan Volkov was up to his usual plotting and planning making sure every piece fell into place just so. His story broke my heart but makes you understand why he sometimes does the things he does. Again he made me smile with his constant matchmaking and meddling ways. I have high hopes for The Butcher and The Beast, and Ivan working his magic again with those two. I loved seeing the previous couples of the series and I cannot wait to see Victor get matched I feel he may fall the hardest and fastest after all his gloating to the other brigadiers it seems only fair lol. I know there will be another enemy approaching there is always someone who wants the Volkov crown, but I know Ivan will be ready and make them regret it. Such great characters and plot lines filled with twists and turns that will have you gripped throughout. I can't wait to see what happens in this series next. Happy Reading. Ivan is send to get Niamh to fall in love with him a get pregnant. Why? No answer to that. It’s his duty and he never fails. But getting Niamh to open up is harder than he expected. And then all changes, something terrible happens, lies were detected, truths be revealed and all changes? Is there still a chance for Ivan, who doesn’t believe in love and Niamh who desperately wants someone to love her? This book is full of heartbreak, hatred, grief, sadness, hope and love. It moved me to tears, broke my heart and mended it all in one. It’s not just scraping the surface, it goes deeper. You get to see the reasons behind the behavior of the protagonists and you learn to love them, with their faults and morally grey choices. There are some triggers to be aware of. A list is to be found on Goodreads. I absolutely loved this story, I couldn’t lay it down. It’s not so heavy on the spice, but it doesn’t need to be. It’s perfect as it is. And I absolutely loved the epilogue.

They both have experienced a lot of trauma in their lives & how they dealt with it. All of the other mobster couples make apperances in this story. The Beast & the Butcher along with Ivan the mobster matchmaker are supporting characters in this story. More history is also revealed about Ivan. Sex is hot. Another fantastic read by Sam Crescent. Ivan is once again practicing his matchmaking skills and has given instructions to Peter on what he must do. He accomplished his tasks but at what cost. A great read, with a complex plot and wonderful characters, and as with bratva books it does come with implied violence.
I'm loving this series but it took me a bit to warm up to Peter. His lack of emotions or feelings made it take a bit longer for me to get into the story. Niamh was a great character. But when she discovers who Peter really is and why he's with her, she's stunned. The banter between these two was great and it kept me turning the pages to see what would happen between them. Will Peter be able to come to grips with his true feelings for Niamh and will he keep her safe? And what will Niamh do when she finds out everything her "grandma" left for her? This was a great story!!
Niamh is the illegitimate daughter of irish mob boss Finn, unwanted and unloved, when the chance to run and start over appears she takes it. Only her path to freedom leads her to Peter. Peter is a brigadier for Ivan who set him the task of getting Niamh to fall for him and get an heir to take over the empire her Grandmother left to her. But what happens when Niamh learns of Peters task? Was anything real between them? My gosh this one hits you in the feels like no other, and hearing more on Ivans past is heartbreaking!! Well written steamy desires, action, high emotions, drama and more! A great addition to the series!
Niamh is treated the worst cruelty from her father her mum as bad so one day she goes on the run and gets a job in a dinner. Ivan peters boss want him to go to Niamh. and get her to marry him. but she does not trust anyone easy, and her father has bounty people looking for her an amazing and emotional read
This is the fourth book in the Volkov series with Peter and Niamh and just based on their story alone, I went and ordered the first 3 books. My heart ached for Niamh and even more so for Peter. Two broken souls who were somewhat forced together and had to work on learning what love truly was. I couldn't put this one down. The plot was very interesting and Ivan was such a mystery. I really enjoyed this story but I will say there were parts that were just way too repetitive. It started to feel like page fillers the number of times Peter indicated his mission and why he was with Niamh. I'm glad to say however the story was strong enough to see beyond that. I have really started to read more and more from this author and found I do like and enjoy her style. This is on my highly recommend list and I will start right away on books 1-3.
Loved how Peter and Niamh were two souls that desperately needed each other to figure out what love is. Ivan sure knew how to instill loyalty. I love that he gave them each other, but also, ultimately, they chose each other. The Byrne men were really something else. I thought Sr. and Jr.'s demises were fitting. Lots of family drama and demons to overcome. Well written.
Love reading the Volkov Bratva series. They have been so heartfelt. Peter and Niamh was a wonderful and heartbreaking read this two have been through so much. But with this matchmaking of the Bratva boss this two have found their happy ever after. Now within this story we have come to know a bit more of Ivan. And I’m hoping that we get the chance to read his story and that he will have a second chance at love too.
Page-Turning Read! Peter had a job to do! He didn’t believe in love, he’d never been loved or felt love but what he did have was commitment and respect for his boss and when he was commanded to do something, he did it and did it well. Niamh had been beaten, abused and unloved all her life now it was her turn to find love but what she had not counted on was the heart-breaking betrayal from Peter. Now there are monsters and there are really evil monsters and this storyline has it all! Full of action, evil, brutality, twists and shocks that could cause some trigger warnings but over all a really intense read you won’t want to put down leading to a well deserved and wonderful HEA.
